The Role of the CFUW Kanata Scholarship Trust

    The objective of the CFUW Kanata Scholarship Trust is to assist women in meeting their educational pursuits by granting scholarships and awards from this charitable trust dedicated to that purpose.

    In its earliest days, the Kanata branch of Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW/Kanata ) established a Scholarship Fund for students pursuing post-secondary education. In 2006, the fund became an officially registered charity, CFUW/Kanata Scholarship Trust.

    The Trustees and CFUW/Kanata members are passionate about education and are committed to making a positive impact in the lives of worthy students and on society at large. The Scholarship Trust is largely supported by fundraising by the club members, donations from individual members and non-members, and memorial gifts.

    The Scholarship Awards

    CFUW/Kanata Scholarship Trust currently awards scholarships of $1,000 each to female graduates of local high schools who will be attending a Canadian university or a provincially-funded college.

    Since 1997, the Trust has awarded over $133,000 in scholarships to 133 graduating high school students, 7 bursaries totaling $3,000 to mature college students, and 55 book prizes totaling nearly $20,000graduating students pursuing university and college education. A one time award special award was given to each of 5 indigenous students together with a one-time award of $5,000 to Cornerstone's Education program.

    The club has also authorized special awards on occasion:

    in 2017 $5,000 was awarded to Cornerstone Housing for Women to help support their computer training program;

    In 2019, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of CFUW across Canada, 1919-2019, special additional $1,000 scholarships were awarded to each of five indigenous post-secondary students;

    In 2019, a bequest by one of our members resulted in the endowment of the Anne-Marie Dallaire-Sarazen Scholarship, a $30,000 annual scholarship in perpetuity, matched by Carleton University, and awarded to a permanent Canadian resident pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Women's and Gender Studies at Carleton University.

    in  2021 sponsorship was provided for a storyteller at the Ottawa Storytellers Festival.

    The CFUW/Kanata Scholarship Trustees offer heartfelt thanks to all of our generous donors, past and present, for their fundraising efforts and monetary contributions, and for believing in the charity’s educational goals. Together, we are making a significant difference in the academic careers of our youth.
