With the beginning of a new CFUW year, many activities have already started up, but it's not too late to join in. Most groups are operating via ZOOM, so you don't even need to leave home to attend. Check the list of Interest Groups and contact the convenor if you would like to sign on.

The Good News

CFUW Kanata will be up and running in virtual format for the 2020-21 season.

We are carrying on with our club activities in spite of the pandemic.

To stay connected, small groups have been meeting while maintaining strict social distancing in members' driveways, in backyards, and in public parks. Starting in September, our regular meetings will be held virtually using ZOOM.

Your Executive and a few other Club members were consulted about concerns related to social distancing and home isolation for persons who are travelling and those recently returned home. As a result, we are recommending the cessation of CFUW Kanata club activities (interest groups, committee meetings and fundraisers) for the next few weeks until April 5, 2020. I expect to update members at the end of the month. This is a recommendation, not a ban, but we encourage everyone to be cautious and safe.

Peter Black is a former Assistant Director of Policy Analysis in the federal Office of Energy Efficiency delivering programs to mitigate global warming.

Gerald Oakham is a Distinguished Research Professor in Science at Carleton University. He is looking at the science behind global warming and the actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of climate change and adapt to the changes that will occur.

Cake and "bubbly" got the meeting off to a lively start and members signed up for interest group activities. After this past week's visit to Rideau Hall, we are busily planning more events this fall:

Rick Mofina, celebrated Canadian writer of fast-paced thrillers, will join us at the Beaverbrook Library on October 3rd. Details
Professor Noel Salmond from Carleton University will share his knowledge in Revisioning the Chaudière Falls, on Tuesday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. at Stonehaven Apartments. Be sure to join us for this interesting presentation.

Jeanne Sarson and Linda MacDonald, our excellent guest speakers at last year's Fall Gathering, have been working for over 20 years to have non-state torture recognized as a criminal offence in Canada. They have made presentations internationally in support of their work and they are sharing with us their recent article that was published in a peer-reviewed publication:

Enchanted Mosaic - a great success

The quilt display was stunning; the silent auction items were wonderfully varied; and the performers and audiences who attended the show - in spite of freezing rain – created a joyful evening of song, dance, laughter and goodwill. We are so grateful for all the energy and effort that came together to create such a triumph.

Our scholarship fund is replenished, and we are already planning for next year’s Enchanted Mosaic. Many thanks to all of you who made this event a wonderful success. (Click on the photo to enlarge it.)

We are Canadian - we can cope with this weather. Although it's cold outside, the high school is a buzz of activity right now. The show will go on as planned. Do join us.

The quilts are all up and on display and they are stunning. The colors, the designs and the intricate needlework are exquisite. The performers are all there taking part in the dress rehearsal. Do please join us for a lovely evening of art and music.

Linda MacDonald and Jeanne Sarson to receive US Award

We’re delighted to report that Linda MacDonald and Jeanne Sarson are being recognized by the Women’s Peacepower Foundation Inc. for their work on non-State torture (NST) and Human Trafficking. The Women of Peace Award is given to “ordinary/extraordinary women around the world who work without funding or recognition for the universal goal of peace, fairness and true justice within the lives of women and their families. . . . [It is given] to women and girls involved in grassroots projects . . . that fall into two broad categories: violence against women and waging peace.”

Linda and Jeanne’s nomination was submitted by Women Graduates-USA (WG-USA) and supported by CFUW National. They will travel to Florida in early November to receive their award. CFUW Kanata congratulates these two determined women for their persistent efforts to promote the human rights of women and girls, and to have Canada acknowledge and name that they have suffered and survived NST victimization.

Linda and Jeanne were the inspirational keynote speakers at CFUW’s Ontario East Fall Gathering in Kanata, in October 2016.

As this year draws to a close, we wish you comfort and joy and much happiness in the new year.

We look forward to seeing you all again at our next general meeting on February 14th at lunchtime.

Big Bijoux Bash

CFUW/Kanata’s Big Bijoux Bash was a rather more elegant event than the name may have suggested. A gloriously sunny location reflected the sparkle of the bijoux and the spirit of all those who attended. It turned out to be a successful contributor to our scholarship fund. A community event to be proud of occurred at our November 12 scholarship fundraiser: Enchanted Mosaic - An Evening with the Arts. it featured impressive artwork by CFUW members, intriguing items on the silent auction table, a celebrated athlete as our host, and a variety concert with something for everyone. Giving Thanks for our Fall Gathering

The weather was rainy and blustery, but inside St John’s Church Hall on October 22, the environment was welcoming and convivial as we gathered with more than 50 representatives from CFUW clubs in Eastern Ontario. The day-long conference was informative and inspiring as our guest speakers explained their 23-year quest to get a cruel social injustice – non state torture – recognized as a human rights crime in Canada.

We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who participated in the event including our M.P Karen MacCrimmon, Mayor Jim Watson, and Councillor Marianne Wilkinson. In addition, special mention must be made of local organizations who generously supported us with donations of goods and services. Special thanks are due to

Dave Fowler, General Manager, Marriot Hotels, Kanata (hotel accommodations for speakers)

The Kanata ladies worked very hard to achieve a successful day. This was evident by the well-constructed & timely program , the beautiful table decorations, the delicious food, the unique crafted gift bags and the church setting - all made for a truly inspirational and thought provoking day. Jeanne & Linda’s dedication to educating us on NST [Non State Torture] shows how CFUW women can be “bigger than ourselves to make the difference.”

CFUW Kanata was delighted to welcome representatives from all of Ontario East’s clubs to this year’s Fall Gathering. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Marianne Wilkinson, and Karen McCrimmon, MP for Kanata-Carleton were also in attendance as were Sandra Thompson, president Ontario Council, and Mary Partington, Regional Director, Ontario East.

Our guest speakers, Linda MacDonald and Jeanne Sarson, engaged us with the compelling story of their mission to change Canadian law to reflect the cruel realities of non-State torture and recognise it as a human rights crime. We were honoured to have them share their experiences gained from presenting their cause to diverse audiences in several different countries; and the successes and setbacks they have encountered along the way. Their determination and profound commitment to this cause are truly inspirational.

Thanksgiving Bear

This little bear joined CFUW Kanata at Thanksgiving in 2016. She is presented to a member who has contributed something of significance to the club in recent weeks. Each month she goes home with a new caregiver. She is very quiet, and she is an excellent listener who never argues against your point of view. She is very neat and tidy and fits into your household without any fuss. She surely deserves a name. If you would like to suggest a name for her, please add it to the Discussion Forum and we can vote for our favourite name at the Christmas Party in December.
