 There's Always Juliet

by

John van Druten

Tickets $34

All the charm and warmth of classic stage drama shine out in this 1930's comedy: A British woman meets an American businessman at a London tea party, and sparks fly. But how far will things go in this cross-border romantic comedy? John Van Druten (who also wrote I Am a Camera, the basis for the musical Cabaret) creates very funny characters, plot lines, and situations. This play speaks to our uninhibited desire to fall in love, to find the perfect mate, and to overcome the obstacles that social mores, geography, and an overprotective sense of discretion throw in our way.

Under the guise of kindliness, handsome Mr Manningham is torturing his wife into insanity. When seeds of doubt invade one's mind, how strong is the pull towards madness? In this gripping mystery thriller, a worried wife wonders if she is going insane. What is real and what is illusion?

A 1944 film version, Gaslight, starred Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, and Angela Lansbury who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in this play.
